Today we talk about Hipstamatic (version 303 – Free), one of the most popular mobile photography apps , available for iOS.
Born as an app for the nostalgic of the ’70s photo effects (i.e.: think about the images of Ben Lowy made in Afghanistan that have attracted some criticism for the excessive use of filters) recently Hipstamitic underwent a profound change, so next to the Classic version there is the Pro version.
Here, we are just reviewing the new possibilities of the new release of the app. We are not going to review the well known filters and lenses for which the app is famous.
By downloading the app you will get a series of films and lenses. Each lens and each film represent a filter and these can be combined with each other. Before shooting you must choose a combination (lens/film = filter) with which you create the photo. In app you have already a few lenses and films but you can obviously purchase what you like, one by one or in packages.
With the Classic version you can only get squared images and here you find also the double exposure’s option. You can individually choose the lens/film combinations and you can also save your favorite ones to have immediate access to them. Saving is especially useful if you have many lenses/films.
With the Pro version you can shoot images with many formats: squared, classic horizontal and also in 5/4, 7/5, 3/2, 5/3, 16/9.
We note, however, that while shooting the display does not fit the format chosen because they are delimited by crop marks only. This is something that still has space for improvement. Interesting, on the other hand, is that Hipstamatic has introduced the ability to shoot in manual mode.
Workflow 1 An important change (already started with the 300 version) is the opportunity to save both the image with the filter effect (lens/film) set before shooting and the image as it is in origin, as it was photographed with the native iPhone camera. In SETTINGS you can find the way to modify your photo (see below “Cattura” under Settings for the Italian version). After taking a photo by selecting the image and choosing “duplicate and change” and by reducing with the cursor the effect of the filter, you get the original image. Both images can be modified and you can apply all the filters (lens/film) that you have.
This feature has caused controversy among purists as before version 300 there was no possibility of changing anything. If you chose a combination (lens/film= filter) the photo could not be changed but we think that this new upgrade can offer opportunities.
Workflow 2 Another important new feature (again in place from version 300) is the ability to adjust the percentage of the filter (lens/film) once the picture is taken, and the ability to choose to photograph only with the lens effect or with film effect without the need to combine both.
Bugs Hipstamatic has always suffered from sudden bugs, rarest in the past, but never as in the recent versions from 300. So if all of a sudden the app quits do not be discouraged, re-open it and continue. We hope that with the next release these things will be sorted out.
Tips Our advice is to use lenses and films without strong effects that determine a very marked deterioration in the file. We suggest using films without frames. This for sending images to Picwant, otherwise try everything and have fun because Hipstamatic lets you do it!
