In autumn and winter when the sun shines, and you have that nice crisp air filling your lungs, you know it is time to grab your smartphone and take many lovely images. The sun during the seasons changes its position in the sky and alters the way we perceive colors and light. In this period the light is special. Allow me to review with you the color theory: you probably studied it during your art or photography course. You know that there are primary colors which are blue, yellow and red. If you combine them you will have secondary colors: so Red and Yellow gives Orange, Yellow and Blue = Green, Blue and Red = Purple. Colors are so important in your images: if you want to convey an harmonious feeling, you will want gentle, relaxed colors that work well together, like yellow, green and blu, red orange and yellow or blue, purple and red. But if you want to create more vibrant images, you will look for strong colors that clutch against each other and create the strongest contrast. These pair of colors are called complementary and are red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple.
Let’s start with using a clear blue sky like a background and pick a simple object like a branch of an olive tree, a flower, a leaf… Remember the key here is color, so the object will have to be of a secondary or complementary color to blue.
Early in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer, place the object and shoot it from below. Move around and try with different lighting; position yourself so that the light comes from your side, your back or in front of you. Do not stop at the first image and compare how the pictures have changed: smartphones have great figures, but remember that the lighting condition will always affect your results, in terms of quality, focus and sharpness, so make the most of it and shoot a lot !
