Arianna De Felice is a student, attending the last year of specialist degree at Università Cattolica of Milan and, since some years, she collaborates with a newspaper focused on media and marketing. When she was a child, Arianna hated to be photographed (in fact all her photos until she was 10 years old show herself angry or with grimace on her face). Then slowly Arianna started to approach photography and occasionally shooting till she became “the photographer” at home and among her friends. She developed her passion for photography during the university studies, especially with the Bachelor’s thesis entitled “Birth and development of the photographic portrait: the Nadar case”, in which she developed a historical comparison between artistic portraiture and photography by making an excursus on some authors, particularly Nadar. Actually her love for the photos has always been just a passion and she never took practical courses or participated in contests. While, this time, Arianna decided to get involved and she won the “Be a Picker” contest with “Dubai” under the category Reportage.
How did you find out about the “Be a Picker” contest?
While I was writing an article related to the applications of photography, and Instagram in particular, I came across an article about the contest “Be a Picker”. After just a few minutes I was already mentioning Picwant in my piece and I was loading the photos using the app.
What kind of opportunity do you think Picwant can offer you?
I am happy to be part of a mobile photography agency, because despites of the images shot with “traditional” cameras, the mobile photography allows me to document always an experience or a place that somehow hit me. The traditional camera is not always with me like my smartphone. Collaborating with Picwant will give the opportunity to prove myself in phtography. In fact, as I said, it’s the first time that I get “into the game” with photography. I always took photos for passion, now I want to see what people think of my shots.
When did you discover mobile photography?
My passion for photography began several years ago. And only when smartphones’ technology developed I adapted to the new possibilities. In fact as soon as the phone cameras improved I started to shoot, at the beginning, like all teenagers I would say, just to remember moments shared with friends.
When you think about mobile photography and its potentility, what does come first to your mind?
Like everything, the mobile photography has its good and bad things as well. In fact, although the smartphone is always in my pocket, sometimes the resolution is not the best. Obviously it depends on the smartphone, but I think the quality, at least in some cases, is not such important: if the photo represents what you had in mind no matter if some small detail is out of focus.
Do you have any apps to suggest among the ones you normally use?
I always shoot using the smartphone’s camera app, maybe I change some details or light but during the post production . The two apps that I use the most are BeFunky, and especially VSCO Cam that I highly recommend for the amount of filters but above all for the adjustments that it allows you to do.
Tell us what is the main element or characteristic to which you dedicate more attention while you are shooting
The first thing is to set the framing: before looking at the scene behind the lens, I analyze it with my eyes. Only after I place the smartphone and and shoot looking at lines and lights.
