Nodar Chernishev is originally from Republic of Georgia. Now he lives in New York.
Nodar has always loved photography. Many, many years ago he received his first 35mm Point and Shoot camera for his birthday, and ever since photography became big part of his life.
Picture taken on 03/12/18 – A couple of months ago I was passing this tall building in Manhattan. I looked up and saw this great perspective. Luckily, I had my wide angle lens in my pocket. I put it on the phone and took this photo. I made it black and white: I think it looks more dramatic. Plus, I believe this building was used in the first spider man movie. Which I think is pretty cool :).
Hello Nodar, welcome to our blog.
How and when did you start getting close to mobile photography?
I started taking photos with the phone when I purchased my first iPhone. I started with the iPhone3. Since then, I have been upgrading the smartphones, as the quality of the cameras on the phones has been improving.
What model of smartphone do you use?
Currently, I am using the iPhoneX. I really like the option of the dual camera. It allows me to go from portrait mode to wide-angle.
Are there any images that you could take only thanks to your smartphone? Could you give us an example?
Yes, one evening while visiting my good friend in West Point, NY, we went out to dinner at a Chinese restaurant. I didn’t take my DSLR with me at that time. As soon as we got closer to the restaurant, my eye immediately went to a beautiful colored neon sign outside the restaurant. Not carrying my camera with me, I reached for my iPhone and was able to capture a nice image of it.

Your portfolio on Picwant website includes several pictures of food. Is it your favorite subject? Why?
I like food. Its texture and colors. Now days so many restaurants in New York prepare and present the food as if it is almost an art form. If I see something that catches my eye, looks very good and colorful, I usually like to photograph it.
How do you set up a photo composition?
I usually prefer to take photos in the morning or in the early afternoon. The natural light is great during this time, that allows plenty of light to come through my window. This is when I like to play with the composition of the subject, photographing and capturing it in beautiful natural lighting.
Photo taken on 05/25/18 – I’m being a kid again. I had this idea in my mind. I wasn’t being sure if it would translate in the picture. Some people got it right away, some people didn’t. But anyway it made them smile. So I guess, it turned out good.
What is your favorite genre of photography?
I enjoy all forms of photography, it would be hard to pinpoint just one. One thing I can say, I really do enjoy still life photography. While shooting still life photography, I have more control of the subject that I’m capturing. This allows me to be more creative with the composition and lighting. I like taking my time while shooting. The whole process may take an hour or so just to take a few photos. But I find this method almost therapeutic.
I call this shot “NUT WORKERS”. I was really enjoying shooting this photo. Moving them around, placing the nuts. Playing with the composition. I guess I’m still a kid in heart :). Although I’m 40 now.
Would you like to try other genres of photography?
I would like to try macro photography one day. See the things from the whole new perspective…
What is the process behind your images and how do you post produce your content?
Sometimes, when I am inspired by something, I start thinking how I can capture a good and interesting image of it. I start to think of composition, backgrounds, maybe things I can add. It starts with a vision in my mind… I usually work with the Snapseed app. This app has a lot of nice editing features that help me to achieve the final result. And another one of my favorite apps is Handy Photo. It has great cloning and erasing tools, that I use when I need to remove logos or brands from my photographs.
Photo taken on 03/22/18 – I love New York City. Its energy, architecture and people. Grand central station is always a busy place just like the city itself. I was walking out of the station when I turned around and saw this view. I guess it’s good to slow down and take a look around sometimes. You never know what you will see.
Do you have any specific project in mind now?
I think that my next project will be aimed to shoot some long exposure pictures in New York with my phone. Possibilities are endless. Enjoy life and take photos along the way.
Thank you very much, Nodar.
Looking forward to seeing your new projects!
