Viviana Rueda was born and raised in Colombia. She studied graphic design and that is when she discovered the love for photography. In 2008 Viviana moved to Denver, Colorado. She always used a DSLR, but in 2015 she purchased a Samsung S6 and began to dabble in mobile photography.
This is an example of the many beautiful murals in Denver. I took this photo using my Samsung Galaxy S7. This artist is one of my local favorites and I love photographing his work. I tried to capture the entire mural using different perspectives.
She submitted her photos to the Your Shot category on the NatGeo community website. It inspired her a great deal and helped her to refine the style. Her work has been featured in the Daily Dozen for Your Shot. Viviana is also very active on Instagram as @viviru27. She loves sharing her best photos on Instagram and the past three years it has served as a personal blog where she posted her work for the millions of Instagram users. She recently won a local competition for a photo of a mansion that is vital in the history of the community. Photography is very much a part of her life. Viviana loves the convenience of mobile photography. She can share her photos instantly with her family and friends as well as her online accounts, where as in the past the process was a bit more drawn out.
Hello Viviana, thanks for joining the interview.
How did you start with mobile photography?
I became more involved in mobile photography after I purchased my Samsung Galaxy 6 in 2015. I was so impressed with the capabilities of the camera. I have a great Nikon, but find it so much more convenient at times to use my Samsung.
What model of smartphone do you use?
Currently I am using a Samsung Galaxy Edge 7. I love the underwater capabilities which allow me to take photographs I never could with my Nikon.
What does inspire your works?
I allow the world around me to inspire my work. I try to use perspective to create multiple images often of the same subject. I love to travel and photography is always on my agenda. My favorite subjects to shoot are nature and places. I love to visit gardens or take hikes to see what catches my eye. I also love it when I can capture images of nature in an urban setting, such as blossoms along a busy avenue or palm trees next to an abandoned hotel.
I took this photo with my Samsung Galaxy S7 while taking a walk not far from my home. Denver is filled with excellent street art and offers plenty of inspiration for urban photos mixed with all types of architecture. I loved the colors the artist used to make this giant hummingbird seem to pop out of the wall.
I saw your portfolio shows many shots about nature and cityscape. What are your favorite subjects?
My favorite subjects would have to be landscapes and of course my son. Before having my baby, I focused mainly on nature as well as architecture and urban settings.
Using my Samsung Galaxy S7, I took this photo of my son playing in his play room. This is my current reality as I am a proud full time Mama. My son is my favorite model and while we play and explore I try to find time to capture all of the amazing moments we share.
What’s your favorite genre of photography?
My favorite genre of photography is cityscapes. I live in Denver, Colorado and we are lucky enough to have every season in abundance. The changes that we see are so impressive and give me plenty to work with. Plus the city is very modern and located near the mountains allowing me to capture a variety of scenes all year long.
What is the process behind your images and how do you post produce your content?
I generally try to explore new places as often as possible. I like to stay current with local events as well. The Samsung comes equipped with decent photo editing capabilities, but I also like to use Aviary. The application is very easy to use and has plenty of editing options. Lately I have started to use Snapseed, which has some options that are unique and more sophisticated.
Do you have any specific project in mind now?
Currently I have a few projects in process. We are planting a garden, so I am documenting the process. Also with summer ahead, I will be headed out to capture images of summer, like swimming, barbecues, fireworks and plenty of hiking.
I took this photo at a vintage amusement park in northwest Denver. It was one of my first photos with my Samsung Galaxy S6. It was a nice evening and the vintage lights were complimented by the late summer sunset. It is one of my favorite photos.
Thank you Viviana! Keep shooting.
